Apple to Require Disclosures of Location Sharing and Dating Features in Apps

Apple is introducing new App Store age-rating requirements that will affect dating apps, AI companions and services that allow users to share their real-world location.
According to a developer announcement published November 2, Apple is adding two new content descriptors to App Store Connect starting on November 16 of this year. The changes are designed to ensure age ratings accurately reflect an app’s features while complying with regional regulations.
The first category revolves around Shared Location. This applies to apps that allow users to share their physical location with another person or group. The second is Dating and Relationships, which covers services that facilitate romantic connections.
Interestingly, Apple’s definition also extends to virtual companions that engage users in romantic or sexual content. That means AI-powered relationship apps will face the same minimum age-rating requirements as traditional dating platforms. Under the updated rules, apps featuring Dating and Relationships functionality must carry a minimum 18+ rating. However, location-sharing features won’t necessarily trigger a higher age rating in every region.
In Brazil, apps offering Shared Location must meet additional requirements. These receive an A16 classification, and those featuring Dating and Relationships receive an A18 rating. There are exceptions. Developers offering family-oriented services, such as location-sharing apps designed for parents and children, can request a lower classification through Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
Apple says developers must complete the new disclosures when submitting an app update or modifying their existing App Store age-rating questionnaire. All apps must have the required declarations completed by January 12, 2027, regardless of whether an update is planned.
