Spotify Offers Podcasters New Way to Make Money From Fans
Launching today across 34 markets, new Spotify Memberships give eligible creators the power to offer exclusive content, bonus episodes, ad-free listening, and unique perks directly through the platform.
First previewed earlier this year at Spotify’s Investor Day, the new membership offering is built directly into the app. This means listeners can discover, join, and access exclusive content without ever having to leave the app.
Spotify says Creators have complete control over what they offer and how they package their benefits. Depending on the show, memberships can include exclusive audio or video, bonus episodes, ad-light or ad-free listening, early access to new releases, or complete archive access. Creators can also set up multiple tiers and flexible pricing options to suit their audience.
The checkout process is entirely streamlined for both Free and Premium users. Fans can easily sign up right from a show’s Spotify page. Once enrolled, members get special comment badges to stand out in discussions, while creators can greet new subscribers with personalized welcome clips.
To help creators grow their subscriber base, Spotify is embedding promotional tools directly into the app. Shows can run targeted promotions, offer free trials, and view detailed analytics that track what drives sign-ups. Furthermore, creators retain access to exportable member data, including contact information from fans who willingly share it, offering better audience ownership both on and off the platform.
Unlike many exclusive subscription platforms that cater only to massive media networks, Spotify is opening memberships to a wide range of creators. The feature is available to eligible shows hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone that meet modest initial thresholds: just three published episodes, 100 active listeners or viewers, and 100 consumption hours on Spotify over the previous 30 days.
When it comes to revenue, Spotify is keeping things friendly for creators by letting them keep 90% of the revenue they generate through the program.
Major shows jumping on board at launch include The Adam Friedland Show, Making Sense with Sam Harris, The Shawn Ryan Show, Two Hot Takes, The Sculpt Society, and YMH Studios, which is bringing memberships to a dozen shows across its network.
