OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, giving developers and ChatGPT users a cheaper model that comes close to the performance of its more powerful GPT-6 Astra model.
The company says GPT-6.1 Sol improves on GPT-6 Sol in areas including coding, computer use and professional work, while costing roughly one-fifth as much as Astra based on standard API input and output token prices.
For developers, GPT-6.1 Sol costs $2 USD per million input tokens, $0.10 USD per million cached input tokens and $10 USD per million output tokens. OpenAI says cached inputs cost 95 per cent less than regular inputs and half as much as cached inputs with GPT-6 Sol.
OpenAI also published benchmark results showing where the new model has improved. On DeepSWE v1.1, which measures software engineering performance, GPT-6.1 Sol matched GPT-6 Astra while costing about one-fifth as much and scored 6.4 percentage points higher than GPT-6 Sol.
The model also scored higher than Opus 5.5 with fallbacks on GDP.pdf, a benchmark based on professional PDF tasks, while costing less than half as much per task. On AutomationBench, GPT-6.1 Sol finished 2.2 percentage points ahead of Opus 5.5 at roughly one-third of the cost.
OpenAI says computer use has improved as well. GPT-6.1 Sol scored seven percentage points higher than GPT-6 Sol on OSWorld 2.0 and came within 2.1 points of GPT-6 Astra while costing roughly one-seventh as much.
On Terminal-Bench Science, GPT-6.1 Sol more than doubled GPT-6 Sol’s score. Its average cost was $5.47 USD per task, compared with $23.21 USD for Opus 5.5 and $23.80 USD for GPT-6 Astra.
OpenAI also says the model makes fewer factual mistakes. At low reasoning effort, 7.7 per cent of tested GPT-6.1 Sol responses contained a factual error, down from 11.4 per cent with GPT-6 Sol.
GPT-6.1 Sol is available starting today to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users through ChatGPT Work and Codex, although it is not yet available in regular ChatGPT conversations. Developers can access it through the OpenAI API under the name gpt-6.1-sol.
The model arrives alongside OpenAI’s new Dots AI agents, which the company also announced today. Dots are designed to work continuously on assigned tasks using their own cloud computers.
OpenAI says a GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast version is also coming to Codex in the next few days, offering up to eight times faster token generation.
